Hello! We took a week off of looking at the computer as we prep for fashion’s busiest month. We’re looking forward to seeing all of the new collections, and hopefully some unconventional materials, upcycling, or maybe someone even repeating an outfit to a fashion week event. (We know that last one might be too big of an ask.)
Anyways, let’s dig into the news that caught our attention the past few weeks.

🥔 Potato yarn may cut the fashion industry's environmental footprint - New Scientist
We love a nerdy new material story. This one is a new discovery that the unused part of a potato can actually be turned into a yarn. A win for farmers, win for minimizing food waste, win for natural materials.
⛔ TikTok Trend Underconsumption Core Ticks Consumer Concerns on Spending, Sustainability - WWD
There’s over 46 million views on the new TikTok trend of underconsumption that appear to be an ‘answer’ to the haul videos that are pervasive on the platform. It’s great to see people pay attention to things like cost-per-wear, but ultimately, brands and people will have a hard time monetizing these trends and in the era where nearly everyone wants to be an influencer, we think the hauls will win out over this trend. What do you think?
📈 The Fashion Blueprint Wants to Help Sustainable, Black-Owned Businesses Grow - Hypebae
Founded by two fashion industry vets who’ve worked at Ganni, Louis Vuitton, Selfridges and had their own fashion brand as well.
🇬🇧‘Profit is being prioritised over climate action’ – British fashion is falling behind on sustainability- The Guardian
44% of British companies have published emission target reductions, but only 4% of British fashion brands have done the same. Some great quotes from Aja Barber in this article.
♻️ eBay Brings Pre-Loved Fashion To The Catwalk In New York And London - Vogue
Okay we intended for the next Common Threads round-up to be all things fashion week, but this is very cool. eBay is hosting runway shows showcasing the range of designer goods that are available on its platform.
👎 Shein: Fashion’s Biggest Polluter in Four Charts - BOF
Every month it seems there’s an article that talks about just how bad Shein is (and it’s always worse than you thought), but is this just becoming an echo chamber? There’s the people who know how bad it is, but there’s also a large group of people that either a) know and don’t care b) are blissfully ignorant and not reading Business of Fashion or NYTimes articles about the overproduction of goods. How can we get this message to new audiences
🟢 Recycling Is Going Out of Fashion. Why? - Futurevvorld
Futurevvorld takes a look at why recycling has a bad rep and is going out of fashion and why consumers feel less motivated then ever to recycle. Here’s our favorite quote from the article, “It’s the, “Taylor Swift took three private jets today, why shouldn’t I drive to the store instead of walk?” mentality – and, honestly, it’s an understandable response.”
That’s it for now! Until next week 🤙
