At this point maybe we should rename Common Threads to 'Trump, Tariffs, and Temu' as that's what we have more updates on this week!

❓ How can we make people care about sustainable fashion? - Vogue Business
Sometimes it feels like we’re screaming into a void about sustainable fashion and/or the negative affects of fast fashion. Vogue Business talked to photographers and filmmakers on how we can have more storytelling around sustainable fashion, with the hopes of getting more attention and awareness.
👕 Fast fashion is haunting L.A.'s wildfire relief efforts - WFTV
People have stepped up for LA and mobilized to provide donations to families in need, which is great. But the amount of clothing that’s being donated, specifically fast fashion, is actually overwhelming donation sites. This article mentions how one recycled fashion brand and retailer has taken over 50,000 pounds of clothing from a single donation site and how another 50,000 pounds was taken to a recycling center in Texas.
🚩 Fast Fashion Market to Grow by USD 79.2 Billion from 2025-2029, Driven by Burgeoning Youth Populations' Demand for Fast Fashion Clothing - PR Newswire
Re: what we said about screaming into a void earlier. Fast fashion is going to continue to grow, and a lot of the demand is from the younger generation, which is so interesting as Gen Z is supposed to be ‘the sustainability generation.’
👩⚖️ US state legislatures take aim at fashion’s sustainability and safety concerns - Fashion Dive
Great article that talks about how federal initiatives on sustainable fashion are stalled (duh), so states are taking matters into their own hands. This piece does a deep dive into new laws and proposed legislation at the state level around more ethical production and manufacturing.
💰 Trump’s China tariffs are shutting the big loophole that make Shein and Temu so cheap - Yahoo Finance
Speaking of politics…Trump’s tariffs actually had a good outcome in cutting off a big loophole that helped Shein and Temu ship packages duty-free into the US. This move is expected to not only make Shein and Temu more expensive, but could also further fuel Amazon’s dominance in the US. There’s also rumors that Shein and Temu are working to move some of their production out of China.
🇺🇸 A Hot New Label for Luxury Brands to Consider: ‘Made in America’ - WSJ
There’s been a lot of conversation around localizing/bringing back production to the US. US-made goods have more attention on them than ever. This WSJ article discuses luxury brands that are flirting with ‘Made In America’ as a selling point and wondering if consumers will pay an even further premium for luxury goods (at a time when the price point is higher than ever too). We think this will be an ongoing conversation over the next few years - here’s another article that talks about moving manufacturing here from more of a brand reputation/risk point of view.
That’s it for now! Until next week 🤙
